Mazda announced five new SUVs globally on October 6, 2021. The U.S. will receive three new models by Mazda, including the Mazda CX-70 with electrification.
2024 Mazda CX-70 Hybrid Concept
Like the Mazda CX-90 and CX-70 models, the CX-70 will be a North American-specific model. Mazda stated that the CX-70 would be a two-row, wide-body SUV for the mid-size segment. The CX-70 is targeted at customers who want SUVs larger than the CX-60, with a bigger presence. It will be able to accommodate more passengers and have a large interior. Mazda could design the CX-70 using Noble Toughness, its latest design concept. The CX-70 should have a strong personality and an SUV-like appearance thanks to its long nose and deeply sculpted front. The smooth surfacing of the body panels, body-colored fender flares, and a drop roofline give the SUV a sophisticated look.
According to an Australian report, the new crossover may borrow styling cues of its bigger sibling. This includes the front fascia as well as the exterior from the B-pillar. The publication’s marketing director, Alastair Doak of Mazda Australia, seemed to agree with this description. It described the CX-70 as having a sloped roofline with five seats and a smaller size than the three-row CX-90.
Features
The Mazda CX-70 should offer a variety of features across grades. It can also be distinguished by different wheels and finishes. It could have key features such as adaptive LED headlights and 20-inch wheels.
Infotainment
Mazda’s interior could include many comfort and convenience features such as a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, Active Driving Display, (HUD), an infotainment system with a 10.25 or 12.3-inch touchscreen, Mazda Connect, the commander control knob, a panoramic sunroof, and wireless charging. There are also USB-C charging ports in both rows. Ambient lighting is another option. Bose’s audio system will keep both the driver and passengers entertained.
Customers will see the CX-70’s classy features such as maple wood and brushed metallic trim, Nappa leather-trimmed seat covers, and dashboard upholstery featuring hanging stitches inspired by hand-bookbinding or Kumihimo (a Japanese weaving method) should make it stand out.
Safety
The CX-70 will include a variety of safety technologies from i-Activsense, such as Mazda Radar Cruise Control with Stop & Go and Rear Cross Traffic Alert. Lane Departure Warning With Lane Keep Assist is also likely to be standard. The standard safety features could include a rear seat alert.
Higher grades will likely have more safety equipment including a 360o View Monitor and See-through View technology. The 360o View Monitor and See-through View technology allows the driver to see the vehicle’s front and rear corners from their perspective. This additional functionality allows the driver to see objects that are not obscured by vehicle bodywork.
Platform
Skyactiv Multi-Solution Scalable Architecture, which was introduced in the CX-60, will be the basis of the CX-70. It will feature a longitudinal mechanical layout (front-engine and rear-wheel drive), which is claimed to offer “Mazda’s next-level” design, performance, and technology.
Dimensions
The Mazda CX-70 will be larger than the CX-60. It measures 186.8 in length, 74.4 in width, and 66.1 in height. Mazda calls the CX-70 a “wide body type” SUV, which means it will be larger than the latter. We also expect that the length and height increments will be higher.
Powertrain
The CX-70 is available in both gasoline and plug-in hybrid versions. The latter will feature the new 3.3L turbocharged, inline-six engine. CX-70 will likely use a modified version of the CX-5’s 2.5L Skyactiv-G four-cylinder, direct-injection gasoline engine. It is paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and i-Activ permanent AWD. Most likely, the transmission will include the electric motor/generator that powers the engine. The CX-70’s plug-in hybrid powertrain may produce approximately 325 horsepower and 370 lb.-ft. torque.
The traction battery unit powering the electric motor will likely be a 17.8kWh lithium-ion unit. It will be placed between the axles and as low as possible to ensure a low center of gravity. It could offer an EPA-est. It could have a range of 25 to 30 miles. The plug-in hybrid system may work in a similar way to the CX-60PHEV shown in the video.
2024 Mazda CX-70 Hybrid Release Date
Autoblog spoke with Jeff Guyton in January 2023. He stated that the CX-70 would arrive in 2023. According to the outlook Mazda (pdf), the CX-70 will be launched in the second half of 2023. Jonathan Sewell’s video suggests that it could debut in July or August and go on sale in the U.S. as an SUV MY2024 in October. The American website has a page called “Upcoming Mazda Crossover SUVs” where Mazda states that the CX-50, CX-70, and CX-90 will be available in the U.S. by 2023. When asked about future models and sales, the company stated that it is currently focusing on electrifying the upcoming CX-90 (which will debut this year) in the U.S.
Although the CX-70 Mazda crossover will not hurt the sales of its smaller siblings it may cause some price overlap. The CX-50 was an AWD crossover with a transverse design. The CX-70 will have a longitudinal engine. This makes it primarily a rear-wheel-drive vehicle with different driving characteristics. The CX-70 will also have plug-in hybrid power, which would increase its performance and fuel efficiency. The larger dimensions will allow for more comfort and space. Customers on a tight budget can still choose the Mazda CX-5, even though the CX70 is available in dealerships.
