Toyota launched the first Crown in Japan in 1955, when it was aimed at a wider range of customers. The nameplate didn’t start attracting the kind of clients that made this car one of the most sought-after in the Land of the Rising Sun until the 1960s and later.
As the new Toyota flagship sedan, the sixteenth-generation model not only has to uphold the Crown’s rich and historically-significant legacy but do so while also competing in a new world where luxury SUVs thrive with little opposition. The 16th-gen Toyota model will be introduced in the U.S. in July 2022 as a model for 2023. It is a hybrid only car.
In a few short months, the Toyota Crown will receive its first update. This will bring it to model year 2024. The 2024 Toyota Crown will be available in the U.S. in a few months.
2024 Toyota Crown Hybrid Redesign
The 2024 Toyota Crown Hybrid is a carryover, with the same design of the current car. It’s impossible to deny the enormous leap of faith Toyota took when it created the styling for the 16th-gen model. The resultant design is a controversial one. It’s shaped by the “lift-up” style that Toyota calls. The top half of its exterior is reminiscent of an elegant sedan in the sun, while the muscular and raised bottom half is reminiscent of modern crossovers.
Toyota understands that crossovers are a big draw and they’re reducing the demand for sedans in many markets. It’s easy to understand why Toyota chose this design. One of the risks of merging the easily identifiable, but juxtaposed design peculiarities from a sedan and crossover into one vehicle is that it may be perceived to be confusing instead of coherent.
The new Crown Hybrid is a sleek car with a smooth front fascia, a sloping roof and flared fenders. The LED headlamps have DRLs on the eyebrows, while another LED bar runs across the main grille. A massive air intake integrated into the bumper is enclosed in gloss black. The large 21-inch wheels and high ground clearance, as well as the black cladding around the door and wheel wells, give the car a coupe-like appearance.
The new Crown Hybrid’s wraparound effect is unique, particularly when painted in a two-tone scheme. A full-width LED bar is located at the rear, merging with the Toyota logo. The subtle boot-lip-spoiler, the easily-legible “Crown” lettering and a satin-silver lower bumper trim are all obvious styling features.
The Toyota Crown Hybrid is built on the TNGA platform. This platform also underpins other large Toyota and Lexus models, including the Grand Highlander Camry RAV4, RX and TX. The ring frame under the body is made of high-strength lightweight materials. Its structural rigidity was also enhanced by using strong adhesives and different construction techniques, such as laser and plate spot welding.
Toyota engineers revised the TNGA platform for the Crown Hybrid to improve NVH. The clever suspension tuning and strategically placed insulation ensure that tire and suspension noises are kept to a minimum. Similarly, the inner rocker as well as the bulkhead is connected with a special adhesive in order to further improve NVH.
Engineers didn’t stop at that. To further enhance the feeling of calm and comfort for the occupants, the engineers sealed the space between engine bay and cabin. The same treatment was applied to the area just above the carpet and beneath the headliner. The acoustic glass is paired with carefully placed trims and materials in the cabin to block out unwanted noises.
Engineers have improved comfort and reduced vibrations by using a softer bushing on the MacPherson struts at the front of the Crown Hybrid. They also coated the coil springs with a polyurethane coating. The seats are mounted with more structural adhesive and specially designed mounting points to reduce road vibrations. Crown’s AVS is equipped with a linear solenoid type actuator to minimize excessive body roll, pitching and swaying. The damping force for these variable-rate Shock Absorbers changes depending on the selected drive mode.
Dimensions
The new Crown Hybrid, which is the full-size sedan of the Crown Hybrid family, sits at the very top. The car measures 196.1 inches. in length, 72.4 in. The width is 72.4 in. The wheelbase is 112.2 inches. wheelbase. These dimensions are likely to remain the same as the model moves into the 2024 model.
Interiors & Features
As it is a carryover, the interior of the 2024 Toyota Crown Hybrid will likely be the same as that of the current model. The features in the grades – XLE Limited and Platinum – are expected to remain the same. Most buyers will find it easy to enter and exit the vehicle thanks to its raised height. The quality of the materials and the fit & finishing are also positive. It is almost like the Lexus cars. The 12.3-inch touchscreen and dashboard design will remind buyers of Lexus cars, which is great. The practical, yet plush interior blends pleasing curves and lines with physical controls while keeping pace with the trend.
Leather upholstery in higher trim levels will have a luxurious feel. However, the Softex or black woven fabric of the entry level variant is far from being a bargain. Standard will be 8-way power adjustable front seats that are heated. The list of features will include a panoramic glass top, Smart Key System with LED ambient lighting and wireless charging. Multi-zone climate control is also included, as well as a customizable 12.3-inch digital display instrument cluster.
Multimedia System
The new Toyota Audio Multimedia System, developed in North America includes the 12.3-inch touch screen. The system is capable of receiving Over-the-Air updates (OTA), and it’s easy to use, with high-quality graphics. Drive Connect integrates Intelligent Assistant with a cloud-based GPS system. The infotainment features wireless Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and Wi-Fi.
The Toyota Audio Multimedia System in the new Crown Hybrid also offers Connected Services, such as Safety Connect, Remote Connect and Service Connect. Remote Connect, which is included in the Advanced Technology package and standard on the Platinum model, is a subscription-based service. Remote Connect comes with a Digital Key that allows users to control the various functions of the vehicle, such as locking and unlocking doors and trunks, energizing powerplants, and sharing the keys with family and friends, all through the Toyota mobile application.
Safety
Toyota Safety Sense (TSS) 3.0 should be standard on all 2024 Crown Hybrid variants. This safety suite combines several modern technologies, such as Pre-Collision System (PCS) with Pedestrian Detection with built-in automatic braking and Dynamic Radar Cruise Control.
Lane Departure Assist with Steering Assist alerts the driver (and may even apply some steering force), if it detects that the lane has been changed without turning on the turn signals. If the DRCC has already been activated, the system will make the necessary adjustments to keep the Crown centered within the designated lane. TSS 3.0 also includes Automatic High Beams (AHB), Road Sign Assist (RSA), Blind Spot Monitor and Rear Cross Traffic Alert.
The safety nest of the 2024 Toyota Crown Hybrid will be boosted by Proactive Drive Assist. This system uses a variety of sensors, including the DRCC, to maintain a safe distance between the vehicle and other road users, such as pedestrians, cyclists, or other motorists. The system can be used to assist the vehicle in steering while applying brakes lightly enough to allow for unhindered forward progress.
The hybrid sedan is also available with Toyota’s Advanced Park System. The system uses multiple sensors, as well as the computing power of the car to control various controls. This allows the Crown Hybrid parallel or perpendicular to park without the need for major inputs from the driver. The 2024 Toyota Crown Hybrid is packed with safety features to ensure the safety of its occupants.
Engine
The Toyota Crown 2024 will come with two hybrid powertrains, the Hybrid MAX and the Fourth-gen Toyota Hybrid System. THS IV combines a 2.5-liter gas engine with two motors – one in the front, and one in the back – for a total of 236 horsepower. Hybrid MAX combines a 2.4 liter turbocharged gasoline engine with two motors located both at the front of rear but with different outputs. It has 340 horsepower and 4000.4 lb.ft.
The THS III powertrain is likely to be offered in the XLE and Limited grades, while the Hybrid MAX will probably only be available in Platinum. The base and midlevel grades will have an eCVT with on-demand all wheel drive. While the top grade should feature a direct-shift 6-speed automatic transmission, and permanent all-wheel-drive. All of them will have a nickel metal hydride battery. The Hybrid MAX powered 2024 Crown will reach 60 mph from 0 in 7.6 seconds, while the THS IV-powered 2024 Crown will do so in a mere 5.7 seconds. The car will require premium gasoline (91-octane), of course, to achieve these numbers.
2024 Toyota Crown Hybrid Price and Release Date
The 2024 Toyota Crown Hybrid could start at USD 41,000. In Q3 2023, (July to September 2023), expect an official announcement regarding the price and release date. In the last weeks of this year, the first models of the new model could begin to arrive in dealerships.
